AEO and GEO: How AI Overviews Are Reshaping Search Visibility
For most of the last two decades, ranking well meant one thing: showing up on page one of Google’s blue links. That’s no longer the full picture. A growing share of search queries now surface an AI Overview — a generated summary that answers the question directly, often without the user ever clicking through to a website. That shift has created two new disciplines that sit alongside traditional SEO: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
What's actually different
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking algorithms that evaluate a page’s relevance to a keyword. AEO and GEO optimize for a different question entirely: will an AI system trust this page enough to cite it, quote it, or summarize it as part of a generated answer?
That trust signal comes from a different set of factors than classic ranking signals:
- Structured data and entity clarity. Schema markup (Person, Organization, FAQPage) helps AI systems correctly identify who is saying what, and connect it to a verified entity rather than an anonymous page.
- Direct, extractable answers. Content written as a clear, self-contained answer to a specific question is far more likely to be lifted into an AI-generated summary than content that requires the reader to piece together an answer across several paragraphs.
- Consistent authority signals across platforms. AI systems cross-reference
sameAsprofiles, citation indexes, and consistent factual claims across a site. Contradictory information across pages — different bios, different credentials — actively undermines that trust.
Why this volatility isn't always about your site
One thing worth understanding: AI Overview visibility can shift significantly even when nothing on your site has changed. Google has changed the underlying models powering AI Overviews more than once, and those transitions have measurably reshuffled which domains get cited — in some tracked cases, a site’s AI Overview citation rate dropped sharply in a single week with no site-side changes at all. Google’s system also appears to remove AI Overviews for entire categories of similar queries if engagement with those overviews is low, independent of any one site’s quality.
That doesn’t mean AEO/GEO work doesn’t matter — it means the goal is to control what you can control (structured data, entity consistency, clear answerable content) rather than chasing every visibility fluctuation as if it were a penalty.
Practical starting points
Add FAQ-style structured data to pages that genuinely answer common questions, keep your professional bio and credentials identical across every page and platform where they appear, and make sure your Person/Organization schema is complete and validated. These are the fundamentals that support both traditional SEO and AI-answer visibility at the same time.
